For many, The Thicket is one of those places that epitomises an English country village.
It goes all the way from Houghton Green to St Ives, eventually turning into just a footpath.
This picture from 1911 shows the village end of The Thicket with Buckley House and T J Briggs (now closed) easily visible. |

St Margarets Church (All Saints) was declared redundant in 1974 and has effectively fallen into disrepair until fairly recently.
If the rumours are to be believed, it may eventually become someone's home. If you can confirm or deny this, please EMAIL ME
This picture shows the church in better times (1910), when it was in active use.
Looking just as it does now, this picture is of the view across from the footpath to the Lock towards the Mill House.
Of course, fashions give it away and I would guess this is from the 20's, although I think that boat is still in use today!

This view shows the Clock (you may have guessed that !), when The Green was green, when Ye Olde Village Shoppe was someone's house and when there wasn't a single car parked around the Green (very rare, these days).
The Smithy can be seen at the back: this is now a private house.
Although now a classic tourist attraction, The Mill was once a working, breathing, living entity and this picture, taken about 1905, shows it at its heyday.
All of the original wheels are in evidence.
As you walk down The Thicket, you pass through some wooded areas, of which this is one.
Although I was unable to locate this particular place, Tim Henderson has emailed me to say that it is actually where there is now an iron barrier and that the bench is still there (I really must get out more and see these things for myself :o).
This photo was taken in 1905 and I'm sorry it is not in colour or I may be able to identify that old guy who looks like he is crying (actually, it looks like my Dad!!).
And this is how it looks now.
The trees and bushes are more overgrown, and my Dad has gone home, but it is still unmistakable.
Standing next to their school near the Chapel Retreat, this group of school children and teachers look as if butter wouldn't melt ...
Maybe in 1905, when this was taken, it didn't!
